Amazon Prime heaps focus on Spanish sport documentaries

By Miguel Ángel Moreno

Madrid, Sep 13 (efe-epa).- Amazon Prime Video is this year banking heavily on sports documentaries, with series following the likes of Fernando Alonso, Fernando Torres, badminton star Carolina Marín and LaLiga, the head of content in Spain, Ricardo Cabornero, told Efe.

“It’s difficult to match the success of live sporting events, but with our first launches we noticed we got a great reception,” he said.

Fernando Torres: The Last Symbol, the series Fernando, which follows the career of Formula One legend Alonso, and Carolina Marín: I can because I think I can, are the latest sporting documentaries on offer from Amazon, these follow on from Six Dreams, which focuses on LaLiga.

The Heart of Sergio Ramos is also due to be released.

Amazon includes its Prime Video service with its Prime subscription, which has some 150 million users worldwide. Although he could not reveal how many users there were in Spain, Cabornero said the kind of sports documentaries released in recent months had attracted new customers.

“What defines these products is that they have a very strong base of followers and don’t leave anyone feeling indifferent. With fiction, there will always be different public opinions or something that may be less attractive to someone, but with sport, we realized there is a base of fans.

“Sport makes you suffer, celebrate and getting to know what happens off the pitch generates a lot of interest.”

Amazon’s audiovisual services have already dipped its toes into live sporting events and last year signed a deal to show 20 Premier League games on Boxing Day in the United Kingdom.

Beyond football or its documentaries on F1 and badminton, Amazon has signed a deal with the academy run by Spanish tennis legend Rafa Nadal to tell the stories of some of the future talents training there.
