Dozens trapped in Hong Kong skyscraper fire

Beijing, Dec 15 (EFE).- Dozens of people remained trapped Wednesday at the World Trade Center in Hong Kong, where a fire began forcing the mass evacuation of those inside, causing at least eight hospitalizations, state media reported.

Public broadcaster Radio Television Hong Kong said the fire began at about 12:30pm local time (4.30am GMT), trapping workers of the offices, houses, restaurants and shops inside.

Eight people suffered from smoke inhalation and were taken to hospital, according to the source.

Social media footage shows dozens of people on elevated terraces and platforms waiting to be rescued. Firefighters are seen using cranes to reach people in the 40-storey building.

Photos show plumes of black smoke billowing out of the lower levels and rescuers surrounding the premises.

The World Trade Center is owned by Sun Hung Kai Properties, consists of 14 commercial floors and 25 offices, and is located in Causeway Bay, one of the main commercial and financial districts of the special administrative district.

The fire has also caused roadblocks throughout the city. EFE
