Tokayev calls for measures to address root causes of ethnic tension

Astana, Apr 27 (EFE) – Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on Thursday called for the adoption of effective measures to address the root causes of ethno-social tensions in the Central Asian country during a speech at the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan (APK).

“We must adopt effective measures to eliminate the causes of ethno-social tension,” the president said, recalling that in the previous session of the APK he issued instructions to “prevent the creation of closed ethnic regions and neighborhoods.”

Tokayev added that specific plans have been developed in this area to date, which must be supported with the appropriate resources.

Tokayev emphasized the importance of paying close attention to regional, cultural, and other differences that he said “hinder the full integration of ethno-social groups.”

“Recent conflicts have primarily occurred in rural areas. Therefore, it is necessary to develop active informational work among the inhabitants of remote villages, especially in areas inhabited by ethnic groups in a compact manner,” he explained.

The APK is an advisory body headed by the president of Kazakhstan, comprised of representatives from the more than 125 ethnicities that make up the country’s population. One of its tasks is to ensure the principle of equality for citizens, regardless of their race, language, religion, or social group to which they belong.

Among the Assembly’s responsibilities, which meets at least once a year, is the formation of the Kazakh national identity through the consolidation of all ethnic groups in the country. EFE
