EU mulls Russian gold import ban in new package of sanctions

Brussels, Jul 15 (EFE).- The European Commission announced on Friday its proposal for an import ban on Russian gold as part of a new package of sanctions.

The ban would be part of the EU’s seventh package of economic sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.

The fresh sanctions would also force Russian oligarchs to declare their EU properties and assets while reinforcing advanced technology export controls.

“In doing so, it will reinforce the alignment of EU sanctions with those of our G7 partners. It will also strengthen reporting requirements to tighten EU asset freezes,” the Commission said in a statement.

The proposal also includes adding new individuals to the list of sanctioned individuals, which already targets 1,901 Russians, including president Vladimir Putin.

“Russia’s brutal war against Ukraine continues unabated. Therefore, we are proposing today to tighten our hard-hitting EU sanctions against the Kremlin, enforce them more effectively and extend them until January 2023,” the president of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said in a statement.
