6.9 earthquake hits Mexico, sparking alert

Mexico City, Sep 22 (EFE).- A 6.9-magnitude earthquake activated the seismic alert in the central parts of Mexico on Thursday.

The quake was an aftershock of the 7.7-magnitude quake that shook the country on September 19.

According to the National Seismological Service the earthquake happened at 1:16 (6:16 GMT) and the epicenter was about 81 kilometers south of Coalcoman, Michoacan — the same area as Monday.

The preliminary magnitude was 6.5 but it was later adjusted to 6.9.

Mexican president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on social media that the earthquake was felt throughout the states of Michoacan, Colima, Jalisco, Guerrero and Mexico City and that there was no report of damages so far.

In Mexico City, the seismic alert prompted hundreds of people to run from their homes and out onto the streets.

The temblor was an aftershock of Monday’s earthquake, which struck less than an hour after a national drill that takes place every year on September 19 to commemorate the anniversary of earthquakes 1985 and 2017, the most devastating in recent history, killing 20,000 and 350 respectively.

Monday’s earthquake killed two people and injured 10 in western Mexico.

More than a thousand aftershocks have been registered since then, this last one has been the strongest.

The president is expected to give more information in his daily press meeting at 7:00 local time.EFE
