Britney Spears breaks silence on guardianship: ‘The world is watching’

Los Angeles, United States, Sep 3 (efe-epa).- Britney Spears filed in the Superior Court of Los Angeles a petition for the details and procedures of the legal guardianship controlled by her father for more than a decade to come to light.

In an unprecedented move during the 12 years that the artist’s public and private life has been under control, her lawyer Samuel D. Ingham III mentioned for the first time the public support that fans give the artist to demand that she not be managed. The case was kept secret, as demanded by his father, James Spears.

“Britney’s guardianship has attracted an unprecedented level of scrutiny from the mainstream media and social media,” read the document delivered to court Wednesday and published by the Los Angeles Times on Thursday

“Far from being a conspiracy theory or a ‘joke’ as James told the media, in large part this scrutiny is a reasonable and even predictable result of James’ aggressive use of ‘sealing’ procedures to minimize the amount of meaningful information made available to the public,” he added.

The objection is part of the hearings that are being held to decide the legal future of the 38-year-old singer, who in other documents has expressed her “strong opposition” to her father returning to control the decisions of her private and public life.

So far all open processes have been developed behind closed doors and without public information, something the singer opposes.

Spears’ lawyer calls for greater transparency in the case “so that it retains the trust of the public” regarding this “precautionary process.”

“In this case, it is not an exaggeration to say that the whole world is watching,” he added.

Two weeks ago, the courts extended the legal guardianship of Spears until February 2021, although the author of “Toxic” claimed that the control function falls into the hands of a specialized lawyer and not her father, something that does not mean she will resign. “in no way to her right to request the termination of it.”

Despite the fact that the case arouses a lot of media attention under the “#FreeBritney” movement, for which several protesters even demonstrated in the Los Angeles courthouse calling the measure “kidnapping,” Spears had never referred explicitly to it.

It all dates back to the infamous year 2007 for the singer, marked by erratic behavior and drug problems, exacerbated by harassment from “paparazzi” after her divorce from Kevin Federline and the release of the album “Blackout.”

Spears’ father played an important role at that time, assuming her guardianship when in 2008 she was admitted to a psychiatric hospital and lost custody of her children. EFE-EPA
