Sánchez brings together Ibero-American progressives to advance social justice

Santo Domingo, Mar 25 (EFE).- Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez intends to ensure that the voice of progressive Ibero-American leaders gain weight in the face of global challenges and advance social justice.

That is the objective of the meetings called by Socialist International in Santo Domingo on the margins of the Ibero-American Summit.

As president of the organization, Sánchez has taken advantage of the meeting of leaders of this political spectrum in the Dominican capital to exchange views.

The leaders of Argentina, Alberto Fernández; Chile, Gabriel Boric; Colombia, Gustavo Petro; Portugal, Antonio Costa; Bolivia, Luis Arce, Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, and Honduras, Xiomara Castro, and others join Sánchez and Socialist International Secretary-General Benedicta Lasi.

The Spanish socialists have said that the objective is to promote debate at the highest political level in the Ibero-American space on the implementation of a fair, sustainable and resilient social agenda in this area as part of the green and digital transitions.

The strong presence of progressive governments in the region, they believe, gives Latin America a unique opportunity to decisively influence the design of new public policies that incorporate social justice as the central axis of these transitions, and also on a global scale.

Threats to democracy and political stability in the area, public policies in favor of youth and women and the fight against climate change are some of the issues included in the agenda.

The defense of social justice was one of the central arguments of Sánchez’s speech in the plenary session of the Ibero-American Summit.

He reiterated this in a press conference at the end of this summit, in which he expressed his satisfaction with the results of the meeting.

Sánchez also highlighted the importance of the debate that took place on issues such as fiscal policy as one of the crucial tools to reduce inequalities and the importance of reforming the international financing system.

The war in Ukraine and its consequences is another matter that progressive leaders are debating in Santo Domingo a few days before Sánchez travels to China and learns firsthand from President Xi Jinping details of the peace plan he proposed to his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.

Sánchez has been reiterating that it will be up to Kyiv to decide the conditions for the start of peace talks and that it should have respect for the territorial integrity of Ukraine.

The defense of democracy, multilateralism, the international rules-based order and the rule of law are principles that Sánchez wants to reinforce in his meeting with the progressive leaders of Latin America.

Before that, the head of the government will hold a meeting alone with Abinader.

He will also convey details of his objective to strengthen ties between the European Union and Latin America during the term of the Spanish EU presidency that will begin on July 1.

A “key” aspect of this rapprochement, he said, was the presence at this summit of the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell. EFE
