Lufthansa strike leaves 130,000 passengers grounded in Frankfurt, Munich

Berlin, Jul 27 (EFE).- A ground staff strike of German airline group Lufthansa altered the plans of some 130,000 passengers Wednesday, affected by the cancellation of their flights at the Frankfurt and Munich airports.

According to company sources, some 1,100 flights have been canceled, practically all of those planned by the airline at these two large airports.

The influx of passengers to its terminals was minimal, since Lufhansa had previously warned those affected, in addition to recommending that they not go to the airports, but rather try to resolve their case online or by telephone.

Along with the possibility of relocating flights in coming days, the company offers travelers the same rail routes for flights within Germany.

Lufthansa reported Saturday the cancellation of more than 700 flights in Frankfurt, the airport with the highest volume of passengers in Germany. Added to this are another 350 from Munich, the second major hub for the company’s international connections to the rest of Europe or other destinations.

The strike was called by the Verdi service sector union for the 20,000 employees that make up Lufthansa’s ground staff in Germany.

The union demands for this sector a wage increase of 9.5 percent or an increase of at least 350 euros per month. Lufthansa’s latest offer stands at 5.5 percent, according to union sources, who consider it well below the accumulated inflation since the last agreement. EFE
