Spain’s PM: Avoid ties to save energy

Madrid, July 29 (EFE).- Spain’s prime minister Pedro Sánchez on Friday urged ministers, public officials and private sector workers to shun neck ties when possible as an energy saving action.

The PM appeared at a press conference at his official Moncloa office wearing a blue jacket and shirt with no tie.

“I’d like you to note that I’m not wearing a tie,” he told reporters. “This means that we can all make savings from an energy point of view.”

“I have asked ministers and all public officials, and I would also like the private sector, if they haven’t already, to not use ties when it’s not necessary. Because that way, too, we will be addressing the energy saving that is so necessary,”

His remarks concluded a lengthy press conference in which he held an overview of his government’s actions and discussed the energy crisis stemming from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and inflation.

The PM also said his executive, a coalition between the Socialist Party and junior partners Unidas Podemos, would put forth fresh measures to boost the country’s response to wildfires.

Spain is emerging from a scorching hot July marked by historically expansive outbreaks of wildfires.

Earlier this month, Sánchez drew a direct correlation between the fires, which killed at least two people, and climate change.

“Climate change kills,” he said while visiting the scene of a forest fire in Extremadura.EFE
