Carolina Marín returns with solid win

Sports Desk, Oct 13 (efe-epa).- Spanish badminton star Carolina Marín has returned to action after a hiatus due to the coronavirus with a solid win over Russia’s Natalia Perminova in the Denmark Open.

The third-seeded Olympic and world champion secured a triumphant return victory in the women’s singles first round at the tournament in Odense.

She had beaten her rival on the two occasions they had met before and won again in two rounds, scoring 21-7 and 21-15 in 28 minutes of play.

Marin, whose last match was in March against Taiwan’s Ying Tai at the All England Open, will play the winner of the match between Line Horjmark Kjaersfeldt and Line Christophersen.

The Spanish champion said afterward: “I feel happy to be back, finally. The most important thing for us is our health and we have to try to enjoy being back on the court, getting the competition feeling because we miss it, and to give our best in every game.

“I feel happy with today’s win. I didn’t feel like I gave my best on court.

“I didn’t feel in good shape today. But I have some training tomorrow and I will prepare for Thursday.”

Spain’s Luis Enrique Peñalver will also play against Denmark’s Rasmus Gemke and Clara Azurmendi will take on Germany’s Yvonne Li in other play on Tuesday. EFE-EPA
