Casa del Refugiado cerrará sus puertas a finales de julio

EL PASO, TEXAS (ABC 7 News) — The director of Annunciation House said its largest migrant shelter, Casa del Refugiado, will be closing this summer.
Ruben Garcia told ABC-7 the shelter has become too difficult to maintain due to the lack of volunteers.
Garcia citing the pandemic as a major factor that led to the shortage of volunteers.
The closure comes as the lifting of Title 42, the pandemic health order that expels migrants back to Mexico, is still unclear. Despite that health order, the number of migrant crossings are rising. Garcia said shelters see close to 3,000 migrants, coming from countries that don’t fall under Title 42, a week.
Another reason for the closure is maintenance. Garcia said the 135,000 sq. ft. warehouse is need of too many repairs.
Garcia said he had hoped the city, or the county would have considered taking over operations at the shelter, but that never happened.
City and county officials along with the Office of Emergency Management have had conversations about how they can alleviate some of the burden of non-governmental agencies like Annunciation House. Currently city employees do volunteer at the shelter. The county has not finalized any plans yet, but discussions about creating a processing center have been held.
When asked if the closure could impact migrants in anyway, Garcia stressed that only that shelter will close and not operations entirely. He added that the goal is to get more hospitality sites up and running before Title 42 is lifted.

TEXAS (La Opinión) — La Casa del Refugiado, uno de los albergues para inmigrantes más grandes en la frontera de Estados Unidos con México, en la ciudad de El Paso, Texas, informó que cerrará sus puertas a partir de agosto próximo debido a la falta de voluntarios.
“El último día que estaremos recibiendo migrantes será el 31 de julio “, dijo Rubén García, director de Annunciation House, organización a cargo del albergue.
El refugio, que comenzó a operar en 2019, recibe semanalmente unos 3.000 migrantes provenientes de diferentes países.
El anuncio llega al mismo tiempo que la Oficina de Aduanas y Protección Fronteriza (CBP, en inglés) informó esta semana de un aumento del 15% de migrantes detenidos en mayo pasado con respecto a abril.
CBP reportó que durante el mes pasado fueron detenidos 177.793 migrantes indocumentados.
Sin embargo, las detenciones a lo largo de la frontera terrestre con México alcanzaron en mayo las 239.416, teniendo en cuenta que hay migrantes que son detenidos, expulsados y retornan y son capturados nuevamente.
Otro problema que enfrentan es las múltiples reparaciones que deben hacer al inmueble.
“El techo debe de ser reemplazado completamente, a veces pienso que si hay una tormenta muy fuerte deberemos pasar paraguas a las personas dentro”, se lamentó.
Por su parte, la ciudad de El Paso se encuentra analizando la posibilidad de establecer un centro de bienvenida para migrantes el cual debería aliviar el vacío que deje el albergue.
