St. Petersburg holds first Russian royal wedding in over 100 years

Moscow, Oct 1 (EFE).- Grand Duke George Mikhailovic Romanov on Friday married his Italian partner Victoria Romanovna Bettarini in what was the first royal wedding held in Russia in over a century.

The pair married at the St. Isaac’s cathedral in St. Petersburg in a ceremony attended by hundreds of guests including royalty from Bulgaria, Egypt and Albania.

George Mikhailovic was born in Madrid 40-years-ago but is not a direct descendant of the last Russian Tsar Nicholas II. His grandfather, Kiril I, who assumed the throne in exile in 1924, was the first cousin of Nicholas II.

No Russian government officials were in attendance at the wedding.

The Romanov dynasty lasted from 1613 until 1917, when Nicholas II abdicated months before the Bolshevik Revolution.

The Bolsheviks executed Nicholas II, his wife and five children on July 17, 1918.EFE
