History of fashion exhibition opens in Paris
Paris, Oct 2 (EFE).- The Paris Fashion Museum on Saturday opens its doors for the first exhibition of its collection that will be displayed gradually, allowing visitors to discover the history of fashion in the capital par excellence of design.
The exhibition features some of the key pieces of its collection, such as Countess Élisabeth Greffulhe’s wardrobe and some avant-garde garments from Comme des Garçons or Rick Owens.
Arranged chronologically, the collection exhibits the particularities of each period, including the cotton imported from India that became fashionable in the late 18th century.
The exhibition, which runs until June, also showcases dresses of gold and silver threads that represented the luxury of the Kingdom of France embodied by Marie Antoinette.
“The main reason for launching a renovation project and transforming the museum’s basement into new exhibition galleries was to be able to present the museum’s collection and the history of fashion from the 18th century to today,” the museum director Miren Arzalluz told Efe.
The exhibition shows the evolution of the wardrobe, with the disappearance of the crinoline from the female wardrobe and its replacement by another pompous armor, the bustle.
Then at the end of the 19th century, there were straighter lines that culminated in the first years of the 20th century with the liberation of the female body.
The exhibition follows the evolution of the 20th century through Cristobal Balenciaga to Christian Dior, before reaching contemporary creators such as Comme des Garçons or Martin Margiela.
It coincides with another exhibition to mark the 100th anniversary of Paris’ Vogue edition, which is presented through the exhibition as a reflection of the cultural and artistic life of the city.
The Vogue exhibit comprises 400 pieces including photographs, copies and designs on the close relationship and influence of its editors on designers, photographers, actresses and models such as Catherine Deneuve and Kate Moss, who have been on the front page the most. EFE
