Pakistan’s PM contracts Covid-19 2 days after vaccination

Islamabad, Mar 20 (efe’epa).- Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan is in isolation after contracting coronavirus just two days after he received the Sinopharm Chinese vaccine, health minister Faisal Sultan said on Saturday.

“PM Imran Khan has tested positive for Covid-19 and is self isolating at home,” Sultan posted to his Twitter account without providing more details on the prime minister’s condition.

Khan was inoculated on Thursday with Sinopharm, the only vaccine available in the country currently.

The prime minister “was not fully vaccinated when he contracted the virus. He only got the first dose and merely two days ago which is too soon for any vaccine to become effective,” the health ministry said on Twitter.

“Anti-bodies develop 2-3 weeks after the 2nd of 2-dose COVID vaccines. #VaccinesWork,” it added.

Khan’s infection comes after many of the National Assembly politicians decided not to wear masks as they voted to elect Senate members earlier this month.

Over the past few days, Pakistan has seen a spike in coronavirus cases after the government had eased Covid-19 restrictions in the wake of an improvement over recent weeks.

Pakistan has reported 3,876 coronavirus cases over the last 24 hours for a total of 623,135 infections since the beginning of the pandemic according to the Pakistani health ministry.

A total of 13,799 people died from the coronavirus, including 42 in the past day.

Although the numbers are still far from July’s peak of 6,800 daily cases, they are higher than the around 1,000 infections a day reported mid-February. EFE-EPA
