Zelenskyy accuses Russia of attacking nuclear power plant

Lviv, Ukraine, Aug 6 (EFE).- Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of attacking the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant and called for sanctions on the Russian atomic industry.

“The one who creates nuclear threats to other nations is definitely not capable of using nuclear technologies safely,” he said in a video, calling on Russia to take responsibility for what he considered an “act of terror”.

“Today, the occupiers created another extremely risky situation for everyone in Europe – they fired at the Zaporizhzhia NPP, twice in one day,” the Ukrainian president said.

“This is the largest nuclear power plant on our continent. And any shelling of this facility is an open, brazen crime, an act of terror,” he added.

The nuclear power plant was hit by two attacks on Friday night with no radioactivity release, the Ukrainian state-run Energoatom company said.

Russia, meanwhile, accuses Ukraine of being responsible for the attack and has called for it to be condemned by international organizations.

The plant has been under the control of Russian troops since March and the International Atomic Energy Agency’s experts have no access to the site. EFE
