Center-left will govern in Santiago de Chile and most regions

Santiago de Chile, Jun 13 (EFE).- Chile’s center-left became the great winner of second round regional elections held Sunday after winning most of the governorships, including that of the capital, with 99.9 percent of votes counted.

The Constituent Unit pact between left and center parties won in Santiago de Chile, where Christian Democrats candidate Claudio Orrego got 52.7 percent of votes, and the group won 10 of the country’s 16 regions — eight at the polls and two in the first round.

This is the first time in history Chile elects its intermediate authorities, instead of appointing them via the government, which is why they are considered crucial elections toward the country’s decentralization.

“We assume this triumph with great humility and with a tremendous sense of responsibility. Raising the Metropolitan Region after the pandemic is going to be a very difficult task,” said Orrego, who beat Karina Oliva, from the Broad Front in the capital, a more radical leftist party.

The ruling right was the big loser: its bet for Santiago was largely ruled out in the first round and it only managed to win in the Araucanía region, in the center of the country, known for being a conflict zone between authorities and Indigenous villages.

Only 2.5 of the 13 million people summoned went to the polls ahead of presidential elections on Nov. 21. EFE
