César Bolaños Díaz, la nueva generación digital de artistas latinos en Memphis
MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — César Ulises Bolaños-Díaz has come to Memphis with one idea in mind: meet more Latin American artists and, above all, learn about the creative proposals of the Mid-South and join the new artistic and cultural trend.
His art tends to be more digital, thanks to the technological revolution in computers and the internet, as well as graphic design, today’s digital art and the hybrid expressions of illustration that have led him to better express himself artistically.
Born in Mexico City, this talented artist is a Graphic Designer/Illustrator who graduated from the Universidad del Valle de México. In addition, he has a specialty in Editorial Design, from the School of Design of the National Institute of Fine Arts.
As Bolaños Díaz told us in an exclusive interview, “art in general has always been a constant throughout my academic training, and it was in 2016 when I fully entered the world of art.”
The young Mexican says that he was invited to participate in a gallery project called “Gama Crea,” from which countless projects came out and where he met many artists, including international artists, which greatly reinforced his interest in carrying out a personal artistic project. “In this gallery, I collaborated as an illustrator, a designer, a cultural manager and, finally, I became the art director. This project is still going on, and I am still in contact with the intention of continuing to nurture that relationship,” said Bolaños Díaz, adding that “my personal project started a couple of years ago when I began to make my own illustrations, especially during the pandemic. It seems to me that it was part of the result of the total confinement, with the strong intention of staying active, that I managed to channel the frustration and uncertainty into a personal project that continues to take shape until now. And thanks to the same confinement, I had to lean more towards digital formats, although I always carry a notebook with me where I take notes or make quick sketches of ideas that I want to carry out.”
In a general exercise of introspection, Bolaños Díaz’s personal project, called Sacre Czar, was born with this search to feel optimistic in a moment full of uncertainty and instability, which is why to date he always integrates a happy face as a gesture of this effort to remain optimistic and/or happy.
As for how he would define his style, he says that he could call it pop surrealism, as he integrates many pop elements and makes compositions with different elements under the same scheme, but from different subcultures. “My inspirations come from manga, anime, street art, contemporary art and cartoonists in general, like Chango Cabral, to name one,” he added.

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — César Ulises Bolaños Díaz ha llegado a Memphis con una idea en mente: conocer a más artistas latinoamericanos y, sobre todo, conocer las propuestas creativas del Medio Sur e incorporarse a la nueva corriente artística y cultural.
Su campo creativo está en lo digital, gracias a la revolución tecnológica en las computadoras y la internet, así como al diseño gráfico, el arte digital y las expresiones híbridas de la ilustración que han llevado a Bolaños Díaz a expresarse en estos medios.
Nacido en la Ciudad de México, este artista talentoso es un diseñador gráfico/Ilustrador egresado de la Universidad del Valle de México. Además, cuenta con una especialidad en Diseño Editorial, de la Escuela de Diseño del Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes.
Según nos dijo Bolaños Díaz en una entrevista exclusiva, “el arte en general siempre ha sido una constante durante toda mi formación académica, y fue en el 2016 cuando entré de lleno al mundo del arte”.
El joven mexicano cuenta que lo invitaron a participar en un proyecto de galería llamado “Gama Crea”, del cual salieron infinidad de proyectos y donde conoció a muchos artistas, incluso de talla internacional, lo que reforzó mucho su interés en realizar un proyecto artístico personal. “En esta galería colaboré como ilustrador, diseñador, gestor cultural y, finalmente, me volví el director de arte. Este proyecto sigue vivo y sigo en contacto con la intención de seguir nutriendo esa relación”, indicó Bolaños Díaz, añadiendo a su vez que, “mi proyecto personal se dio hace un par de años cuando comencé a realizar ilustraciones propias, especialmente durante la pandemia. Me parece que fue parte del resultado del encierro total, con la fuerte intención de mantenerme activo, que logré canalizar la frustración y la incertidumbre en un proyecto personal que hasta ahora sigue tomando forma. Y gracias al mismo encierro, tuve que inclinarme más por los formatos digitales, aunque siempre llevo conmigo una libreta donde tomo notas o hago bosquejos rápidos de ideas que quiero llevar a cabo”.
En un ejercicio general de introspección, el proyecto personal de Bolaños Díaz, llamado Sacre Czar, nació con esta búsqueda de sentirse optimista en un momento lleno de incertidumbre e inestabilidad, por lo que hasta la fecha siempre integra una cara feliz como un gesto de este esfuerzo por mantenerse optimista y/o feliz.
En cuanto a cómo definiría su estilo, él dice que podría llamarlo surrealismo pop, ya que integra muchos elementos pop y hace composiciones en las que integra distintos elementos bajo este mismo esquema, pero de distintas subculturas. “Mis referencias vienen desde el manga, animé, Street art, arte contemporáneo y dibujantes en general, como el Chango Cabral, por mencionar uno”, agregó.
El plan a futuro de Bolaños Díaz es seguir creciendo como artista y, por otro lado, satisfacer su necesidad de crear y explorar distintas formas de plasmar lo que hace. “Por el momento estoy muy interesado en visitar algún taller de cerámica y explorar un lado escultural utilitario a mi estilo (por ejemplo)”.
