Champions semis set: Real Madrid-Man City rematch; Milan derby

Sports Desk, Apr 19 (EFE).- Manchester City drew 1-1 Wednesday with Bayern Munich to win the Champions League quarterfinal 4-1 on aggregate and set up a rematch of last year’s epic semifinal with Real Madrid, who overcame a loss in the first leg to beat the English side and went on to win their record-extending 14th title.

Inter Milan and Benfica combined for six goals in the second leg of their tie, but the Italian club prevailed 5-3 and will face cross-town rivals AC Milan in the semifinal.

Trailing 3-0 after the first leg in Manchester, Bayern were much better on the attack than they were at the Etihad and would end the night with seven shots on target to just two for the visitors.

But former City player Leroy Sane inexplicably missed the net in the 17th minute before forcing a save from Ederson on a free kick four minutes later.

The fans at Allianz Arena had their hearts in their mouths in the 37th minute when City’s Erling Haaland stepped to the spot to take the kick after a hand ball by Dayot Upamecano, only to see the Norwegian scoring machine miss.

Ederson denied Kingsley Coman in the 42nd minute and the teams reached the break deadlocked 0-0 on the night.

Twelve minutes into the second half, Haaland snuffed out Bayern’s flickering hopes, beating Yann Sommer to make it 4-0 on aggregate with his 48th goal of the season in all competitions.

The 22-year-old striker also became the youngest player to accumulate 35 goals in the Champions League. And he reached the milestone in just 27 matches.

Bayern won a penalty for a City hand ball and Joshua Kimmich converted in the 82nd minute to spare the reigning 10-time Bundesliga champions the embarrassment of being shut out over two legs.

Inter beat Benfica 2-0 in the first leg in Lisbon and increased their advantage in the 14th minute of Wednesday’s clash at the San Siro with a goal by Nicolo Barella.

The visitors went level on the night in the 38th minute, as an unmarked Fredrik Aursnes headed in from the far post.

Lautaro Martinez made it 2-1 (4-1) in the 65th minute and his Argentine countryman Joaquin Correa added a fifth goal overall in the 78th before the Nerazzurri conceded late goals to Antonio Silva and Peter Musa.

The two legs of the semifinals are scheduled for May 9-10 and May 16-17.
