Missing person found alive 17 days after earthquake in China

Beijing, Sep 21 (EFE).- A hydroelectric plant worker was found alive on Wednesday, 17 days after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit the central Chinese province of Sichuan on Sep.5, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

The man, identified as Gan Yu, was rescued by a resident of Yuejin village, who was helping the search teams in the area.

According to local media reports, Gan’s physical and psychological condition was stable.

Ni Taigao, the villager who found Gan, said the latter was in a good condition when he found him and expressed his good fortune on being rescued.

Gan Yu and his companion, Luo Yong, decided to stay in the hydroelectric power plant in Wandong after the earthquake, in order to open the dam and prevent possible floods due to landslides downstream.

The next day, they managed to escape into mountains around, but after a few days, Luo – being in a better physical shape – went seeking help, which he found on Sep.8.

Since then, Gan Yu has been trapped in the area without any knowledge of how he was able to feed himself, until he was found on the verge of death by the villager.

The earthquake on Sep.5 was the most intense since 2017 in Sichuan province, an area of frequent seismic activity, where a magnitude-8 earthquake in May 2008 left more than 90,000 dead or missing.

In the past five years, Sichuan has witnessed 455 earthquakes with a magnitude of 3 and above, and five earthquakes of magnitude 6. EFE
