Chelsea romp over 5th-tier Chesterfield to advance FA Cup

Sports Desk, Jan 8 (EFE).- Chelsea hammered fifth-tier Chesterfield 5-1 Saturday to advance to the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Eschewing what could have been an opportunity to rest his stars against a not-very-formidable opponent, Blues coach Thomas Tuchel picked a starting 11 that included Romelu Lukaku, Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner.

The hosts led 3-0 after 20 minutes on goals by Werner, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Lukaku.

Andreas Christensen made it 4-0 a few minutes before half-time and Ziyech converted a penalty in the 55th minute after Pulisic was fouled in the box.

But Akwasi Asante scored with 10 minutes left in regulation to ensure that Chesterfield would not leave Stamford Bridge with nothing to show for their efforts.

Chelsea have reached the FA Cup final in four of the last five seasons and their most recent triumph was in 2018, when they edged Manchester City 1-0.

The team that bested the Blues to hoist the trophy last year, Leicester City, thrashed Watford 4-1 on Saturday to move into the fourth round.

Two other Premier League clubs, Everton and Southampton, needed extra time to dispatch second-division sides Hull City and Swansea, respectively. EFE apa/dr
