(Update: changes headline, lede, adds info on death, driver arrested)

London, Jul 6 (EFE).- A girl has died and at least eight other people were injured after a car crashed into a building at an elementary school in southwest London on Thursday morning, police said.

In a statement, London’s Metropolitan Police confirmed the child’s death following the collision at The Study Prep in Wimbledon, the borough where the eponymous tennis Grand Slam is being held.

“This is tragic news and our thoughts are with the girl’s family and friends, and everyone affected today,” Detective Chief Superintendent Clair Kelland said.

“We remain at the scene and are continuing our investigation into the full circumstances of the incident,” Kelland said, adding that police were awaiting updates from London medical services on further injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, a woman in her 40s, has been arrested “on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving,” the Met said.

In an earlier statement, police had said two adults were among the injured.

Police were not treating the incident as terror-related. EFE
