China adds record new 40,000 daily Covid cases

Shanghai, China, Nov 27 (EFE).- The number of daily coronavirus cases in China has reached a record high of 39,791, including 36,082 asymptomatic infections, the country’s health officials said on Sunday.

The National Health Commission said it registered the cases on Saturday in a spree of records that continued for the fourth day in a row.

The commission said among the 3,709 symptomatic cases, 3,648 were caused by local transmission.

China counts symptomatic and asymptomatic cases separately.

On Friday, the health authorities reported 35,183 new cases, of which 3,474 were symptomatic and 31,709 asymptomatic.

Canton in the southeast saw a high of 1,386 infections, Beijing reported 747, and Chongqing in the center 194.

The three regions accumulated more than half of the new asymptomatic cases even though Beijing does not include them in its count of confirmed cases unless they show symptoms.

The authorities also indicated that 61 symptomatic cases and 224 asymptomatic were overseas travelers.

Over 320,000 people across China are in isolation under medical observation for being asymptomatic carriers of the virus.

China, which applies a harsh “zero tolerance” policy towards the new coronavirus, has suffered waves of outbreaks in recent months attributed to the omicron variant.

The variant has caused record numbers of infections not seen since the pandemic began in the first half of 2020.

The health commission detailed that, throughout Friday, more than 2,000 patients got discharged after beating covid.

The number of active infected with symptoms in mainland China now stands at 31,430, 111 of whom are in serious condition.

Since the pandemic began, the country has registered a total of 307,802 infections and 5,233 deaths. EFE
