5 killed by celebratory gunfire after Yemen U-16 victory over Saudi Arabia

Sanaa, Dec 14 (EFE).- At least five people were killed and over 100 were injured by bullets from celebratory gunfire after Yemen’s junior football team beat Saudi Arabia in the U-16 West Asian Cup, Houthi sources said Tuesday.

Thousands fired their AK-47 rifles into the air last night in Houthi rebel-held regions of Yemen to celebrate their team’s victory over Saudi Arabia in a penalty shootout.

As a result, five people were killed and 124 were injured, according to the Houthi health ministry.

Saudi Arabia has fought against the Houthis on behalf of the internationally-recognized Yemen government in the Yemeni civil war since 2015.

In Yemen, and in other countries in the Middle East, it is common to celebrate prominent events with shots in the air, even weddings or funerals, which in many cases end with injuries or even deaths. EFE
