China congratulates Biden, Harris on US election win

Beijing, Nov 13 (efe-epa).- China on Friday congratulated United States President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris for their victory in the 3 November election.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin offered the country’s first message recognizing the victory of the Democratic Party candidates.

“We respect the choice of the American people and congratulate Mr. Biden and Mrs. Harris,” he said.

“We understand that the result of the US elections will be confirmed in accordance with US laws and procedures,” he added.

China is one of the last major countries to congratulate Biden, who is set to take over from incumbent President Donald Trump in January, although the Republican leader has yet to concede defeat in the polls and has made unsubstantiated claims of electoral fraud.

Relations between Beijing and Washington have deteriorated rapidly since March 2018, when Trump charged into a trade war.

What started as a tit-for-tat sanction regime and a series of failed negotiations on trade balance has spread into other sectors such as intellectual property.

Over the months the situation has teetered toward a cold war, pitting the nations against each other in the world of technology and geopolitics, with both engaging in military posturing in the South China Sea.

Trump has on several occasions blamed China for Covid-19, referring to it as the “China virus.”

US media has called the election in favor of Biden, who has a projected total of 290 electoral college seats compared to Trump’s 217. Biden managed to take key battleground states like Arizona, Georgia, Wisconsin and Michigan.EFE-EPA
