China detects 434 fresh Covid cases, including 373 local transmissions

Beijing, Oct 10 (EFE).- China’s National Health Commission on Monday reported 434 fresh Covid cases, out of which 373 occurred due to local transmission in provinces such as Inner Mongolia (north, 119), Xinjiang (west, 70) and Guangzhou (south, 31).

Health authorities also reported the detection of 1,672 asymptomatic cases, including 1,566 transmitted locally, although Beijing does not recognize Covid cases unless the infected exhibit symptoms.

A total of 12,084 of such cases are under observation, of which 878 have arrived from overseas.

The 61 remaining symptomatic cases were found among travelers from abroad at various points of entry in the country.

China, which has a strict “Zero covid” policy in place against the coronavirus, has suffered a series of outbreaks in recent months due to the omicron variant, which has caused record caseloads, including some of the highest infection levels since the pandemic began.

The NHC reported on Monday that 166 patients were discharged overnight after successfully beating covid.

The total number of active symptomatic infections in mainland China stands at 3,889, including 12 critical cases.

The eastern city of Shanghai on Monday imposed lockdowns in some areas due to a surge in cases after the “golden week”: holidays to mark China’s National Day celebrations, which resulted in an estimated 422 million travels in the country.

The city reported 34 positive test results – including 31 asymptomatic ones – the highest since July.

Shanghai had been put under a total lockdown for over two months earlier this year due to its worst coronavirus wave, triggered by the Omicron variant.

According to official figures, since the beginning of the pandemic, China has reported 253,575 Covid cases, including 5,226 deaths. However, the caseload does not include asymptomatic infections.

So far, medical follow-ups have been carried out for more than 6.3 million people who came into close contact with those infected, including 290,737 residents who are still under observation. EFE
