Sanchez pays tribute to Mandela on visit to Johannesburg

Johannesburg, Oct 27 (EFE).- Spanish prime minister Pedro Sanchez paid tribute Thursday to late former South African president Nelson Mandela by visiting the former Constitution Hill prison in Johannesburg, where Mandela was imprisoned.

The building, which now houses the Constitutional Court, has become one of the main symbols of the struggle against apartheid.

“Paying tribute to those who once fought for freedom and democracy, which are causes that affect and challenge us all, is not only an act of recognition, but also of enormous gratitude,” Sanchez said during his joint appearance with South African president Cyril Ramaphosa.

Sánchez toured the former prison complex accompanied by his wife, Begoña Gomez; the Spanish Minister of Industry, Tourism and Trade, Reyes Maroto, and the rest of the delegation he has led on this trip to Africa.

During the tour, he visited the cell in which Mandela was imprisoned and where Mahatma Gandhi was imprisoned for a period, as well as the isolation cells of the prison. EFE
