Veteran Modric renews contract with Real Madrid

Madrid, Jun 26 (EFE).- Luka Modric has extended his contract at Real Madrid, meaning the Croatian international midfielder will remain at the Bernabeu until he is 38, the club announced Monday.

Modric, who has won 23 titles with Real since he signed in 2012, turned down an offer to play in Saudi Arabia, and is now expected to retire as a Madrid legend.

“Home sweet home,” Modric wrote on his social media accounts after the renewal agreement was made official.

The Croatia captain will begin his 12th campaign at the Bernabeu with renewed competition for a starting place, after Real signed rising English star Jude Bellingham and extended contracts for Toni Kroos and Dani Ceballos, not to mention Uruguay’s Fede Valverde and French duo Aurelien Tchouaméni and Eduardo Camavinga.

“Real Madrid C.F. and Luka Modric have agreed on the extension of the player’s contract, who remains linked to the club until June 30, 2024,” the club announced in a statement in which it highlights the 23 titles won by the Croatian player in 11 seasons in which he played 488 matches.

Five Champions League titles, three La Ligas, five Club World Cups, four European Super Cups, two Copa del Rey and four Spanish Super Cups make Modric the third most successful player in Real Madrid’s history, behind former teammates Karim Benzema and Marcelo, who won 25. EFE
