Did you know March is National Nutrition Month®? What began as a week-long event in the 1970’s has turned into a month – long celebration encouraging consumers to make sound nutrition choices with the help of Registered Dietitians (RDs) and Dietetic Technicians Registered (DTR). Keep reading to learn about ways you can get involved and start building healthy lifestyle habits today!

  1. Be Prepared: Many of us need grab and go food items to fit our busy lifestyles. One of the best ways to make sure quick meals reflect your health goals is to have healthy, pre-portioned items on hand to take with you when you need them. Keep these on hand for those quick meals and snacks: Fresh fruit, peanut butter, canned tuna, boiled eggs, shelf stable milk, string cheese, 100 Calorie packs of nuts and pretzels, and whole grain bread and cereals.
  2. Choose wisely when dining out: Many restaurants now have nutrition facts printed on their menus. Use them to help you make wise choices. Try these tips to keep you on track: choose baked or grilled over fried, order sauces and dressings on the side, choose the lunch sized portions, order sandwiches open faced, on flatbreads or on lettuce wraps instead of on a bun.
  3. Maintain balance: Try to choose healthy options most of the time. But remember to allow yourself a treat every now and then. Moderation is key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Aim to create balanced meals with a variety of foods, pay attention to portion sizes, and limit intake of sugars and salt.
  4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help: Learn more about what a Registered Dietitian can do for you and how to find one in your area by visiting the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics at www.eatright.org.
