MPD Initiates ‘Operation Safe Travel II’ to Combat Interstate Shootings

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL/WMC) — Ya ha habido siete tiroteos interestatales este año, según la Policía de Memphis.

El último ocurrió el miércoles, 29 de enero, por la mañana en la I-240 en dirección norte, cerca de la salida de la avenida Unión.

Nadie resultó herido, pero la Policía de Memphis dice que este es sólo otro ejemplo de la necesidad que hay de intensificar la presencia de patrullas en las carreteras.

El Departamento de Policía de Memphis realizó una conferencia de prensa sobre los tiroteos en las carreteras interestatales y la seguridad de la gente.

MPD anunció que traerán de vuelta la Operation Safe Travel, un esfuerzo para aumentar la presencia policial en las carreteras interestatales de Memphis.

Esta vez estarán agregando al menos 10 oficiales más al grupo de trabajo, de los cuales algunos serán encubiertos.

“Obviamente tenemos oficiales en la carretera interestatal, pero como resultado, después de que el ciudadano pasa al oficial, entonces acelera y comienza a conducir erráticamente. Entonces, lo que hemos puesto en su lugar es un par de autos normales para que no sepas dónde está ese oficial, y ese oficial pueda detener ese comportamiento, llame con anticipación y haga que la patrulla policíaca los detenga”, dijo el subdirector Samuel Hines, de MPD.

Hines dijo que el departamento inició la Operación Safe Travel II el martes, 28 de enero, a la 1 p.m.

Desde el martes, la Operación Safe Travel ha logrado siete arrestos, 26 infracciones con cita en corte y un arma incautada de un vehículo.

MPD no quiso comentar sobre la cantidad de arrestos que hicieron de tiroteos interestatales anteriores.

Sin embargo, la policía dice que está buscando a un hombre blanco de unos 30 años, con una barba castaño rojiza descuidada, que conduce un sedán estilo caja.

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) — There have already been seven interstate shootings this year, according to Memphis Police.

The latest one happened Wednesday morning, January 29, on I- 240 northbound near the Union exit.

No one was hurt but Memphis Police says it’s just another example for a need to step up patrols.

The Memphis Police Department held a press conference concerning interstate shootings and safety.

MPD announced they are bringing back Operation Safe Travel — an effort to increase police presence on Memphis interstates.

This time they are adding at least 10 more officers to the task force, and some of those officers you won’t see until it’s too late.

“Obviously we have officers on the interstate, but as a result, after the citizen passes the officer then they speed back up and start driving erratically. So what we’ve put in place is a couple of plain cars so you don’t know where that officer is, and that officer can stop that behavior, call ahead and have the marked car pull them over,” said Deputy Chief Samuel Hines, MPD.

Hines said the department initiated Operation Safe Travel II Tuesday, January 28, at 1 p.m.

Since Tuesday, Operation Safe Travel has netted seven arrests, 26 moving citations and one gun seized from a vehicle.

MPD would not comment on the number of arrests they’ve made from previous interstate shootings.

However, police say they are looking for a white male in his mid-30’s with an unkempt brown, reddish beard driving a box-style sedan.
