Beijing further enhances Covid-19 measures to stop omicron

Beijing, May 4 (EFE).- Beijing extended restrictions and closed schools and subway stations, while millions of residents underwent several rounds of tests this week in an attempt to stop the spread of Covid-19 in the Chinese capital.

Authorities reported 51 new cases detected in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of infections since the current outbreak began – on April 22 – to 453.

Authorities decreed Wednesday that restaurants, gyms and other indoor establishments must remain closed until further notice, a restriction previously taken but only until the end of a five-day holiday for Labor Day.

Another of the measures taken Wednesday is the closure of 60 subway stops and hundreds of bus routes, many of them in the Chaoyang district, home to everything from embassies to business skyscrapers, where most of the infections recorded to date have been detected.

The government asked those who work in that district, the most populous in the capital, to do so from home starting tomorrow, given that “the number of cases continues to rise,” according to state network CGTN.

Apart from the confinements imposed in those neighborhoods that present cases, those who want to leave the city must present a green health code on their mobile phone accompanied by a negative test carried out in the previous 48 hours.

A negative result is also necessary to use public transport, enter parks – some of them crowded in recent days – or even to enter the multiple existing public services in the capital. It’s a measure taken after one person infected three others in the area, the deputy director of the Chinese Center for Disease Prevention and Control Pang Xinghuo said Wednesday.

Municipal authorities have postponed the return to school after the holidays, and three rounds of mass tests have been decreed until Thursday for residents of most districts of the capital.

The tracing of close contacts of positives and of people who have simply entered establishments on the same day as an infected person, even if it is at different times, who are imposed home quarantine for several days, also continues. EFE
