Morikawa wins The Open 2021 golf tourney, Rahm regains top ranking

Sports Desk, Jul 18 (EFE).- US golfer Collin Morikawa on Sunday won The Open 2021 golf tournament held at Royal St George’s golf course in the British county of Kent, the second major triumph of his career.

The 24-year-old shot a 4-under 66 in the fourth and final round, for a total of 265 strokes (15 under par), two less than the runner-up, countryman Jordan Spieth.

Morikawa, the winner of the 2020 PGA Championship, replaced Irish Lowry Shane, as the tournament champion, a contest that was not held last year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Morikawa became the first golfer to secure both titles in his debut appearances in each competition.

Spain’s Jon Rahm came third, four strokes off the pace, to regain the No. 1 ranking he conceded to US golfer Dustin Johnson, who came in eighth at the Royal St George’s course.

Rahm needed a top-15 finish and to better Johnson and to reclaim the top spot he has dropped last Sunday.
