Scale of destruction of Ukraine’s power network is ‘colossal’

Lviv, Ukraine, Nov 22 (EFE).- The scale of destruction of Ukraine’s energy network is “colossal”, and there are hardly any thermal and hydroelectric power stations left in the country that have not been attacked, the head of the state electricity transmission system operator said Tuesday.

“All thermal and hydroelectric generation, if we are talking about large stations, was damaged by missile strikes,” Volodymir Kudritski, CEO of Ukrenergo, told reporters, according to the state-run Ukrinform.

The official added that after six massive attacks by Russia on the country’s energy infrastructure, “there are practically no thermal and hydroelectric power stations left intact in Ukraine.”

He stated that every major facility “has already been blown up, and some substations several times, three to eight times.”

The CEO explained that “after each Russian attack it takes time to restore the destroyed infrastructure and supply consumers.”

Kudritski urged citizens to prepare for possible long-term power outages, Interfax reported.

“A blackout is not the end of the world, it is a total or substantial shutdown of the power system, after which it begins to resume,” he said.

“We have to be prepared for certain prolonged blackouts that will exceed four hours, in some cases after the last attack it was even a day or more in some regions,” Kudritski added. EFE
