Chinese city carries out mass testing after detecting fresh Covid-19 cases

Beijing, Sep 22 (EFE).- Authorities in the city of Harbin, capital of the northeastern Chinese province of Heilongjiang, announced Wednesday a mass testing of its 10 million population after eight local cases of coronavirus were detected.

Local health authorities said in a statement they hoped to complete the tests by Friday and residents were not to leave home until then except for than taking the test until the process ends.

The National Health Commission of China announced the detection of three Covid-19 cases in Harbin on Tuesday while the provincial authorities announced another five cases in the city on Wednesday.

These new cases come ahead of the so called “Golden Week” of holidays between Oct. 1 and 7, marked by a large number of people traveling across the country.

So far, China has developed a zero-tolerance policy for the coronavirus, including strict entry controls with quarantines of up to three weeks and massive testing at sites where an outbreak is detected.

According to the health authorities Wednesday, China recorded 41 fresh cases on Tuesday – 16 locally transmitted infections and 25 from abroad.

It further reported currently 984 active cases, of which two were in serious condition, apart from 342 asymptomatic cases.

According to official figures, China has detected 95,851 infections and 4,636 deaths since the start of the pandemic. EFE
