PSG confirm Pochettino as coach after Tuchel dismissal

Paris, Jan 2 (efe-epa).- Paris Saint Germain confirmed the signing of Argentinean Mauricio Pochettino as the team’s new coach on Saturday, four days after German Thomas Tuchel officially left the club.

In a statement, PSG said it was “pleased” to announce the appointment of the former Tottenham Hotspur manager, who has signed a contract until June 30, 2022, with the option of extending for a further year. Details of the salary and other conditions were not made public.

He is expected to hold his first training session with the French league champions in the capital on Sunday after the players return from Christmas vacations.

In the statement, Pochettino said he was “really happy and honored” to be joining and thanked the owners of PSG — a club that “has always held a special place in my heart” — for trusting him.

“I have wonderful memories, especially of the unique atmosphere of the Parc des Princes. I return to the Club today with a lot of ambition and humility, and am eager to work with some of the world’s most talented players,” he said.

The Argentinean, who is now 48 years old, “has history” at PSG, having worn the shirt between 2001 and 2003 in 95 games, scoring 6 goals, and leading the side as captain.

He insisted that he returns now “with a lot of ambition and humility,” and said he is “eager to with some of the world’s most talented players.”

“This team has fantastic potential and my staff and I will do everything we can to get the best for Paris Saint-Germain in all competitions. We will also do our utmost to give our team the combative and attacking playing identity that Parisian fans have always loved,” Pochettino said.

PSG president, Nasser Al Khelaïfi, said he was proud of the return of the former captain, a step that fits “perfectly with our ambitions”.

“With this appointment of Mauricio Pochettino, PSG commits itself to continue its strong development in the coming years,” Al Khelaïfi said.
