CIA director meets with Russian counterpart to discuss nuclear risks

Washington, Nov 14 (EFE).- CIA Director William Burns and his Russian counterpart, Sergey Naryshkin met on Monday to discuss the increasing nuclear risk and international tensions arising from the war in Ukraine.

A White House official told Efe that the intelligence chiefs discussed “the consequences of the use of nuclear weapons by Russia, and the risks of escalation to strategic stability,” as well as “the cases of unjustly detained US citizens.”

According to the spokesperson, Kyiv was given prior notice of the meeting in Ankara, Turkey.

Ahead of the encounter, the state department underlined that there would not be “negotiations of any kind” or discussion of a “settlement of the war in Ukraine.”

The spokesperson added that the US head of intelligence would “raise the cases of unjustly detained US citizens.”

This is the case of basketball player Brittney Griner, who was transferred last week from Moscow to a “remote” prison to serve a nine-year sentence for drug possession and smuggling, after she was detained in February at a Moscow airport with cannabis oil in her suitcase. EFE
