Macron sworn in for second term as French president

Paris, May 7 (EFE).- Emmanuel Macron was sworn in for his second term as France’s president on Saturday during a ceremony in which he vowed to focus on the European project and the conflict in Ukraine.

“The next phase that is beginning will be one of resolute action for France and Europe,” he said in a 10-minute speech during the swearing-in ceremony at the Élysée Palace.

He said the most urgent priority was to avoid an escalation in the conflict resulting from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, where, he added, “democracy must win.”

The 44-year-old head of state made reference to his re-election on April 24, when he beat his far-right opponent Marine Le Pen with 58.5% of the vote.

“While many have given into withdrawal, to nationalist temptation, the nostalgia of the past and the sirens of ideologies we thought we had left behind in the last century, the French people have chosen a European project of scientific and ecological progression,” he said. EFE
