Kishida begins working remotely after testing positive for Covid-19

Tokyo, Aug 22 (EFE).- Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida began working remotely on Monday, a day after testing positive for Covid-19.

Government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno said Kishida has mild symptoms and is fulfilling most of his schedule, including virtual participation in the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD).

Kishida had planned to attend TICAD in Tunis over Aug. 27-28, but given that Japanese law requires isolation for 10 days, the president must participate online and can return to work in-person from Aug. 31.

He was also scheduled to visit countries in the Middle East after attending TICAD, a trip that may end up being canceled.

The 65-year-old leader had a slight fever and cough late on Saturday and tested positive the next day, after having been on vacation since the 15th.

According to Matsuno, Kishida has no close contacts besides his family, and they have tested negative. The president will continue to isolate for the next few days.

Kishida has tested positive as the archipelago is experiencing a seventh wave of Covid-19 infections with record high case numbers. EFE
