The State of Fast Casual Restaurants

Several months ago, I wrote about the growing popularity of fast casual restaurants. Though the customization of their food remains attractive to young customers, there has been a lull recently in the industry’s growth. Though some chalk up their stagnation as an issue with pricing, I believe several factors are at work.

One negative of the rapid growth of fast casual dining is that the market has quickly become saturated. Though new locations attracted masses of customers before, now it feels like every street corner has a Chipotle imitator or a Panera-style restaurant. In the case of Chipotle and Panera, they have weathered the storm thanks to their ubiquity and established niche. However, less-differentiated latecomers such as LYFE Kitchen and Blaze Pizza have suffered, closing locations across the country.

Though not the sole issue, price is central to customer preference. Recently, fast-food establishments have popularized their combos (such as Wendy’s four-for-four and Taco Bell’s cravings deal). Alongside regional chains like Cookout, fast-food restaurants are selling the same amount of food at half the price of fast casual.

Finally, I find that Chipotle, as the quintessential fast casual restaurant, gives insights into both positives and negatives of fast casual establishments. Although designed to appeal to trendy, tech-oriented youth, the loud music, cramped seating, and cafeteria-line structure makes Chipotle and other fast casual restaurants feel hectic. Though fast casual chains might simply be doubling down on appealing to their clients, slight accessibility adjustments may allow them to appeal to a wider range of customers.
