Australian Titmus stuns Amerca’s Ledecky, Caeleb Dressel wins 1st gold

Tokyo, July 26 (EFE).- Australia’s Ariarne Titmus defeated five-time Olympic gold medalist Katie Ledecky of the United States in the 400-meter freestyle final on Monday

With this, Titmus took the gold in the first of the three individual events in which the two will face off in the Olympic Games.

Titmus, who had already snatched the gold from Ledecky at the 2019 world championships held in Gwangju, South Korea, won in a time of 3:56.69, 0.67 less than Ledecky, who had to settle for the silver.

The defeat thwarts Ledecky’s aim for a gold-medal sweep in the Japanese capital and settle for at least one silver as she had done in the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she won four gold medals and a silver.

Meanwhile, Caeleb Dressel of the US won the first of six gold medals he is aiming for at the Tokyo Olympic Games after leading his team to victory in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay on Monday.

Dressel swam the first leg in a time of 47.26 to give his team the lead, which the Americans never lost to take the gold. EFE
