Hong Kong police investigate Chinese anthem booing during Olympics

Beijing, Jul 30 (EFE).- Hong Kong Police launched an investigation into the booing of the Chinese anthem in a shopping center in the city during the live broadcast of a Tokyo Olympics competition, local news outlet RTHK reported Friday.

Police sources told media that the incident occurred Monday night, when dozens of people gathered at the city’s APM shopping center to watch Hong Kong’s Cheung Ka-long win the men’s fencing final against Italian Daniele Garozzo.

Some of those present during the medal ceremony booed the anthem when it began to play, as shown by videos that have spread through social networks.

Local media reports said several security officers, both plainclothes and uniformed, were been deployed Friday in the city’s shopping centers to “prevent any potential booing of the national anthem during the live broadcast.”

This deployment coincided with the broadcast of the swimming event in which swimmer Siobhan Haughey achieved her second medal in the tournament, silver in the 100-meter freestyle, which made her the first multiple Olympic medalist of the former British colony. Haughey won the silver in 200 freestyle meters Wednesday.

Several shopping centers are broadcasting the Tokyo Olympic Games, which have become the Olympic event in which the semi-autonomous city has achieved the best participation. EFE
