Kabul cricket ground blast killed 2, police say, Taliban downplay UN figures

Kabul, Jul 30 (EFE).- Kabul police on Saturday said two people were killed when an explosion hit a cricket ground in the capital Kabul on Friday as the Taliban denied United Nations reports that 19 were slain.

Khalid Zadran, a police spokesman, said the cause of the explosion at the Kabul Cricket Stadium was a hand grenade.

The Taliban government has yet to offer an official death toll, although Afghanistan’s cricket board said 13 were injured.

Taliban interior ministry spokesman Abdul Nafi Tekor said the government “strongly rejected” the UN reports that 19 had died, which was published by the organization’s secretary general Antonio Guterres.

Since coming to power in August last year, the Taliban have been repeatedly accused of deliberately downplaying the impact of such terror attacks to paint an image of security.

The Islamic State terror organization is behind many of the attacks in the country. EFE
