Thousands protesters call for action to curb climate change in Brussels

Brussels, Oct 10 (EFE).- Some 25,000 people on Sunday took to the streets of Brussels to call for action to tackle climate change ahead of Glasgow’s COP26 conference.

The rally was organized by the Coalition Climates, which groups some 80 entities including NGOs, unions, youth organizations and citizen movements.

“We expect more ambitious, solidarity and coherent measures,” said Nicolas Van Nuffel, head of the coalition that demands stronger political action to curb global warming less than a month before COP26.

Glasgow’s event will aim to move towards keeping the increase in global temperature below 1.5 degrees Celsius and to achieve that the polluting emissions are fully absorbable by 2050.

These goals, however, will not be achieved at the current rate of emissions, according to experts.

Among the protesters were victims of last summer’s floods, which left over 40 people killed and major material damage and that have been linked to climate change.

“I am a climate refugee,” Bernadette Leemans, a resident of the southern Chaudfontaine city who had to move after the floods, told Le Soir newspaper.

The current actions to curb climate change “are laughable,” she said.

By the month’s end, the Belgian government is to present a plan to cut the polluting emissions by 55 percent compared to 1990 levels by 2030, a shared goal by the European Union members. EFE
