Shelby County Hires a New Multicultural Affairs Coordinator

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — Con el título de coordinador de Asuntos Multiculturales e Hispanos, Francisco Iván Flores Soberanes tomó la posición en la nueva administración del alcalde electo del Condado de Shelby, Lee Harris.

Originario de la capital mexicana y siendo recipiente de DACA, Flores se perfila a desempeñar un rol muy importante dentro de la comunidad latina en nuestra ciudad. Y con pocas semanas en el trabajo, Flores ya tiene una agenda bastante ocupada.

Para conocer un poco más a Flores y sus planes como el nuevo coordinador de Asuntos Multiculturales en la Alcaldía del Condado de Shelby, La Prensa Latina tuvo una entrevista con él y esto fue lo que nos dijo:

LPL: ¿Desde cuándo estás en esa posición?

Francisco Iván Flores: Desde hace dos semanas aproximadamente. Comencé el lunes, 26 de noviembre, y estoy viendo qué hacía mi predecesora Ivette Baldizón, y lo que se va a hacer y lo que ya no. Hay algunas funciones que se van a mover a otros departamentos.

LPL: ¿Cuál sería tu función?

Francisco Iván Flores: Apoyar a la comunidad multicultural en el condado de Shelby. Aunque aparentemente no es una porción grande de población, estamos trabajando para que reciban los mismos servicios que la población en general; sin embargo, muchas veces la barrera del lenguaje es uno de los problemas más grandes que encontramos a la hora de servir. Queremos asegurarnos de hacerles llegar los servicios.

LPL: ¿Cómo piensas ayudar a la comunidad hispana?

Francisco Iván Flores: Asegurándonos de que todos los servicios disponibles en la Alcaldía del Condado de Shelby lleguen a la población latina y a la multicultural, desde ayuda financiera para pagar la renta o la luz hasta con los servicios de salud, ya que muchas personas no saben que los centros de salud ofrecen servicios gratuitos o a bajo costo. Uno de mis objetivos es hacerle notar a la población que servimos que ahí están los servicios para todos en general.

LPL: ¿Qué tienes en mente para lograr que haya un mayor acercamiento entre la alcaldía del Condado de Shelby y los hispanos?

Francisco Iván Flores: Estamos evaluando en dónde están concentradas las comunidades para ver cómo acercarnos y servir. Hemos planeado diferentes eventos y también queremos seguir organizando algunos otros que se han hecho antes, como la feria de salud, por ejemplo. También se están planeando otros eventos que involucran a sindicatos y a otras organizaciones, algo que definitivamente ayudaría a nuestra comunidad.

LPL: Actualmente, ¿qué servicios hay disponibles en la alcaldía para la comunidad hispana?

Francisco Iván Flores: Unos de los servicios es el de la asistencia con los pagos de renta, luz y en el centro de crímenes violentos, en donde hay representantes que atienden completamente en español.

Antes de concluir con la entrevista, Flores hizo mucho énfasis en que es muy importante que los jóvenes empiecen a colaborar con sus familias y que realicen trabajo comunitario, ya sea recogiendo la basura o ayudando en clases. Por otro lado, le pide al público que tenga paciencia, ya que apenas comienza el mandato de Harris, quien tiene una tendencia progresista, a pesar de estar en un área tan conservadora.

Siendo residente de Memphis por 22 años, Flores es un ávido fotógrafo y pasa mucho tiempo sirviendo a la comunidad en eventos como “Desayuno Con Libros” y “Migrar Es Hermoso”, el cual provee de alimentos, bebidas, ropa, medicina, consejería y, sobre todo, apoyo emocional a los inmigrantes que han sido liberados en los centros de detención fronterizos y viajan por todo el país, haciendo una parada en nuestra ciudad en la estación de autobuses Greyhound. También ha trabajado en otras organizaciones como Comunidades Unidas En Una Voz, Centro de Trabajadores, Centro de Paz y Justicia, Centro Cultural y Latino Memphis.

Entre sus héroes se encuentran sus padres, que lo han apoyado tanto, y distintas personalidades como Malcolm X, Dolores Huerta, César Chávez y el Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — Francisco Iván Flores Soberanes accepted the  Coordinator of Multicultural and Hispanic Affairs position in the administration of newly-elected Shelby County Mayor, Lee Harris.

Born in Mexico City and being a recipient of DACA, Flores is set to play a very important role within the Latino community in our city. And with only a few weeks at work, Flores already has a very busy schedule.

To learn a little more about Flores and his plans as the new Coordinator of Multicultural and Hispanic Affairs in Shelby County, La Prensa Latina had an interview with him and this is what he told us:

LPL: When did you start working as the new Coordinator of Multicultural and Hispanic Affairs?

Francisco Iván Flores: I started on Monday, November 26, and right now I am looking at what my predecessor Ivette Baldizón did before, as well as what is going to be done and what doesn’t need to be done anymore. Also, there are some obligations that are the responsibility of other departments from now on.

LPL: What would be your main role?

Francisco Iván Flores: My main role is to support the multicultural community in Shelby County. Although it is not a large portion of the population, we are working to make sure that everyone in the county gets the same services. However, many times the language barrier is one of the biggest problems we encounter when it comes to serving.

LPL: How do you plan to help the Hispanic community?

Francisco Iván Flores: Making sure that all the services that we have available (rent assistance programs, health services, etc.) reach the Latino population as well as the multicultural population. Many people do not know that there are health centers in the county that offer free or low-cost services. One of my goals is to reach out to the community and tell them that there are services for everyone in general.

LPL: What do you have in mind to help Mayor Lee Harris get a closer and better relationship with the Hispanic community?

Francisco Iván Flores: We are evaluating where the communities are concentrated to see how we can approach them so we can provide a much better service. We have planned different events and we also want to continue organizing some others that have been done before like the health fair, for example. Other events involving unions and other organizations are also being planned, something that would definitely help our community.

LPL: Currently, what services are available in the Mayor’s Office for the Hispanic community?

Francisco Iván Flores: One of the services is that of assistance with rent and utilities bills, including help in the center of violent crimes, where we have representatives who speak Spanish.

Before concluding the interview, Flores emphasized that it is very important that young people begin cooperating with their families and doing some community work, whether it be picking up the trash or helping in class. On the other hand, he asks the public to be patient, as the Harris administration is just beginning.

As a resident of Memphis for 22 years, Flores is an avid photographer who spends a lot of time serving the community at events such as “Desayuno con Libros” and “Migrar Es Hermoso,” which provides food, beverages, clothing, medicine, counseling and, above all, emotional support for immigrants who have been released from the detention centers at the border. He has also worked in other organizations such as Communities United In One Voice, Workers Interfaith Network, Mid-South Peace and Justice Center, Cultural Center and Latino Memphis.

Among his heroes are his parents, who have supported him so much, and different leaders such as Malcolm X, Dolores Huerta, César Chávez, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
