MEMPHIS, TN (FOX 13 News) — FOX13 took a deep dive into the career of a St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital doctor who, court records show, was killed while defending his family from robbers.
Police said Alexander Bulakhov, 32, was killed Sunday during a robbery in Downtown Memphis.
Investigators said it happened while Bulakhov and his wife and daughter were out for a walk.
Officers arrested Marious Ward, 23, and Brandy Rucker, 22, in connection with Bulakhov’s death. They were both charged with first-degree murder among other charges, police said.
Investigators said Bulakhov was shot while trying to protect his wife and daughter.
A GoFundMe page created for Bulakhov’s wife and daughter says that the family moved to Memphis in July.
Prior to coming to Memphis, he and his family spent four years in New York City’s Brooklyn neighborhood, according to his LinkedIn page.
Bulakhov worked as a postdoctoral researcher at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University.
His LinkedIn page states that Bulakhov worked as a researcher for five years at the Research Center of Biotechnology in Moscow, Russia.
He received his doctorate degree in biotechnology and biochemistry from the Research Center of Biotechnology. He received his master’s degree in chemistry from Moscow State University in 2013.
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital released the following statement:
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of a valued member of the St. Jude community. Our thoughts are with Alexander’s family and we are working to support them during this difficult time.”
