UN’s Guterres arrives in Ukraine ahead of Zelenskyy, Erdogan meeting

United Nations, Aug 17 (EFE).- The head of the United Nations Antonio Guterres arrived in the Ukrainian city of Lviv Wednesday ahead of meetings with Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The office of the UN chief’s spokesperson confirmed his arrival in the western city, which has remained relatively unscathed since the Russian invasion began in February, in a social media post.

Guterres is due to meet with Zelenskyy and Erdogan on Thursday, where the trio will discuss cereal exports from Ukraine’s Black Sea ports, a process Ankara has mediated.

The UN leader is also to hold a bilateral meeting with Zelenskyy to discuss the Russian invasion and the dangers the conflict presents with regards to the Zaporizhzhya nuclear plant, the UN has said.

Guterres is on Friday due to visit Odesa and its port, which is being used to export grain following a deal involving Ukraine and Russia, with the mediation of the UN and Turkey.

He is later to travel to Istanbul to visit the coordination center created to monitor the grain corridors. EFE
