Zelenskyy calls for ‘diplomatic, preventive’ action for Taiwan
Singapore, Jun 11 (EFE).- Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday called for a diplomatic solution to security tensions between China and Taiwan.
Zelenskyy made the remarks during a speech he delivered via video link to the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Asia’s largest annual security forum, which has been dominated by discussion surround a potential attack by China on Taiwan.
Without directly referring to Beijing, Zelenskyy pointed to the example of Ukraine, which illustrates how the world must “always support any preventive action”.
Japan’s prime minister Fumio Kishida warned Friday that “Ukraine today may be East Asia tomorrow” as tensions simmer over Taiwan.
China claims sovereignty over the island and considers Taiwan a rebel province.
“Diplomatic solutions are needed to support countries that need help. We must not leave anyone behind, at the mercy of other more powerful countries,” Zelenskyy said when asked after his speech if he agreed with Kishida.
Zelenskyy called for diplomatic efforts to be stepped up before any potential conflict, “not when there are already thousands of dead”, referring to the Russian invasion of his country.
In that situation, “it is too late to discuss, the world must put Russia in its place, and its place is on its territory,” he said.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine “is not only important in Europe, but globally, as it is an affront to international law and an attempt to return to the 19th century,” he said. EFE
