Xi congratulates Salvadoran president on reelection, calls to deepen ties

Beijing, Feb 7 (EFE) .- Chinese President Xi Jinping congratulated his Salvadoran counterpart Nayib Bukele on his re-election and called to continue deepening bilateral cooperation and raising the level of diplomatic relations, state media reported Wednesday.

In his letter, sent Monday, Xi spoke of the rapid development of ties between China and El Salvador in recent years and the “fruitful results” of practical cooperation, which “has brought about tangible benefits” for Salvadorans.

According to China’s leader, this shows that the establishment of diplomatic relations between both countries “is in line with the fundamental and long-term interests” of the two countries.

Xi said he thanked El Salvador for recognizing the “One China” principle, adding that he attaches great importance to the development of relations with the country and spoke of his willingness to strengthen cooperation in various fields.

El Salvador established diplomatic ties with China in August 2018, after breaking them with Taiwan, and Bukele visited the country in 2019, where he met with Xi and then-Prime Minister Li Keqiang, in addition to receiving an honorary doctorate for the Beijing Foreign Studies University.

Bukele, 42, won Sunday’s elections after running thanks to a controversial interpretation of the country’s constitution made by the supreme court’s constitutional chamber.

“According to our numbers, we have won the presidential election with more than 85 percent of the votes and a minimum of 58 of 60 deputies in the assembly,” wrote on X the Salvadoran president, the first running for re-election since the country’s civil war ended in 1992. EFE
