Chinese military vows zero tolerance for ‘separatist acts’ in Taiwan

Beijing, Mar 10 (EFE).- China’s military will never tolerate “Taiwan independence separatist acts” or interference by foreign forces, according to a People’s Liberation Army (PLA) spokesman cited Thursday by state media outlet Xinhua.

PLA military exercises in the region are not aimed at “Taiwan compatriots,” but rather at “separatist activities” and foreign interference, said Wu Qian.

These actions, which Wu said are carried out by the island’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party, were the root cause of “the current tension” in the Formosa Strait, he said.

In the National People’s Congress meeting being held in Beijing, he stressed that the Taiwan issue is an internal matter for China.

“The more the United States and Japan make waves on the Taiwan question, the tougher actions we will take to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Wu added.

China considers Taiwan a rebel province and seeks reunification for which it has not ruled out the use of force.

The island, which is governed autonomously, is also one of the main sources of conflict between China and the United States, mainly because Washington is Taiwan’s main arms supplier and would be its greatest military ally in the event of a war with the Asian giant.

Around the time of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a Taiwanese national security official said that “Beijing could take advantage of the situation in Ukraine to start a cognitive war with Taiwan to convince the island’s inhabitants that the United States would not honor its commitment to defend the island.” EFE
