Croatia beat Japan on penalties to reach World Cup quarters

Doha, Dec 5 (EFE).- Croatia beat Japan 3-1 on penalties after the game ended 1-1 after extra-time on Monday in the World Cup Round of 16.

Goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic saved three kicks as the 2018 finalists progressed to the quarter finals at the expense of Japan, who will rue missing several chances to grab a historic win and qualify for the last 8 for the first time.

The Samurai Blue had taken the lead after an impressive first half display, Daizen Maeda finishing from close range just before half time.

Japan overall had the better chances, but Croatia, led by experienced captain Luka Modric, equalized through Ivan Perisic’s excellent header which took the game to extra time.
