Time to say enough to indiscriminate trafficking of weapons: Pope Francis

Vatican City, May 25 (EFE).- Pope Francis condemned on Wednesday a mass shooting at a primary school in Texas that killed 21 people and called for an end to the “indiscriminate trafficking of weapons” in the United States.

“I am heartbroken by the massacre at the elementary school in Texas. I pray for the children and the adults who were killed and for their families,” the pontiff said.

Pope Francis added that the time had come to say “enough” to the “indiscriminate trafficking of weapons” in the United States.

“It is time to say ‘enough’ to the indiscriminate trafficking of weapons. Let us all make a commitment so that tragedies like this cannot happen again,” he said.

At least 19 primary school pupils and two teachers were shot dead on Tuesday after a man opened fire at a primary school in Texas.

The suspected gunman, identified by Governor Greg Abbott as 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, was also killed.

The attack was the deadliest school shooting in modern Texas history and the second deadliest school shooting in the last decade, after the Sandy Hook massacre in Connecticut, where 26 people were killed.

The 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida, where 17 were killed, was the third deadliest on record.

Republican governor Abbott is a staunch defender of firearms and in 2021 he signed a series of state laws that made Texas a Second Amendment Sanctuary State. EFE
